Psalm 48 · Magnus Dominus
48:1 GREAT is the Lord, and highly to be praised in the city of our God, even upon his holy hill. 48:2 The hill of Sion is a fair place, and the joy of the whole earth; upon the north side lieth the city of the great King: God is well known in her palaces as a sure refuge. 48:3 For lo, the kings of the earth were gathered, and gone by together. 48:4 They marvelled to see such things; they were astonished, and suddenly cast down. 48:5 Fear came there upon them; and sorrow, as upon a woman in her travail. 48:6 Thou dost break the ships of the sea through the east-wind. 48:7 Like as we have heard, so have we seen in the city of the Lord of hosts, in the city of our God; God upholdeth the same for ever. 48:8 We wait for thy loving-kindness, O God, in the midst of thy temple. 48:9 O God, according to thy Name, so is thy praise unto the world's end; thy right hand is full of righteousness. 48:10 Let the mount Sion rejoice, and the daughters of Judah be glad, because of thy judgments. 48:11 Walk about Sion, and go round about her; and tell the towers thereof. 48:12 Mark well her bulwarks, consider her palaces, that ye may tell them that come after. 48:13 For this God is our God for ever and ever: he shall be our guide unto death.
Psalm 126 · In convertendo
126:1 WHEN the LORD turned again the captivity of Sion, then were we like unto them that dream. 126:2 Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with joy. 126:3 Then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them. 126:4 Yea, the LORD hath done great things for us already; whereof we rejoice. 126:5 Turn our captivity, O LORD, as the rivers in the south. 126:6 They that sow in tears shall reap in joy. 126:7 He that now goeth on his way weeping, and beareth forth good seed, shall doubtless come again with joy, and bring his sheaves with him.
First LessonIsa. 62
62:1 For Zion's sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem's sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. 62:2 And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. 62:3 Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God. 62:4 Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzi-bah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. 62:5 For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee. 62:6 I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not silence, 62:7 And give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth. 62:8 The LORD hath sworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his strength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the sons of the stranger shall not drink thy wine, for the which thou hast laboured: 62:9 But they that have gathered it shall eat it, and praise the LORD; and they that have brought it together shall drink it in the courts of my holiness. 62:10 Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people. 62:11 Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him. 62:12 And they shall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou shalt be called, Sought out, A city not forsaken.
Second LessonMatt. 25:1–13
25:1 Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. 25:2 And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. 25:3 They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: 25:4 But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 25:5 While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. 25:6 And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. 25:7 Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. 25:8 And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. 25:9 But the wise answered, saying, Not so; lest there be not enough for us and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. 25:10 And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut. 25:11 Afterward came also the other virgins, saying, Lord, Lord, open to us. 25:12 But he answered and said, Verily I say unto you, I know you not. 25:13 Watch therefore, for ye know neither the day nor the hour wherein the Son of man cometh.
