What the two digital witnesses do—and do not—establish

Principal finding

Standard witness and received-use edition

The Society of Archbishop Justus file is a one-page-at-a-time rendering of Daniel Berkeley Updike’s 1930 Standard Book. The AOC/Satucket edition presents the 1928 Prayer Book text with the official 1945 Psalms and Lessons for the Christian Year. It is not a facsimile of the 1930 Standard Book, but represents the form in which the Prayer Book was subsequently printed and used.

CertificateThe 1928 Standard Book certificate signed by the presiding officers of both Houses, followed by the Editing Committee.A 1945 certificate by John Wallace Suter, together with a 1929 certificate by Lucien Moore Robinson; a note identifies a pagination change in the Ordinal and following material in editions before 1945.
Preliminary materialIncludes Ratification and Preface. Its contents page lists the remaining preliminaries, but the PDF omits pages vii–xxxvi.Supplies Concerning the Service, the official 1945 Psalms and Lessons for the Christian Year, the Calendar, rules for feasts and fasts, precedence, and tables for finding Holy Days. Its contents page identifies the superseded 1928–44 titles in footnotes.
Shared text checkedVisual comparison of the Ratification, opening Preface, and Morning Prayer pp. 3–4 found no substantive wording difference. Typography, lineation, page arrangement, rubric treatment, and some punctuation spacing differ. This is a representative check, not a completed whole-book collation.

Limits of the present diff

What remains unproved

  • The AOC file’s embedded legacy fonts have no Unicode maps. Automated extraction corrupts most letters, so a reliable whole-book character diff has not yet been made.
  • The AOC/Satucket file and the Justus files share a Satucket editor. Agreement on their shared Prayer Book text cannot substitute for comparison with an independently digitized certified printing.
  • The imported HTML came from the separate Justus 1928 web transcription. Its wording, punctuation, capitalization, paragraphing, rubrics, and appointments still require section-by-section collation.
  • The incomplete drafts added on 15 October 2026 have been replaced for the propers, service directions, and calendar tables by complete lineated source imports. The revised 1945 Psalms and Lessons are included in full. Full textual collation remains a separate, unfinished phase.
  • The lectionary authorized in 1943 and published in 1945 governs this project. The original 1928 lesson tables are outside scope and are not a pending item. The earlier original-table address now points readers to the revised tables.
  • Imported text retains source lineation and display initials; extraction artifacts, punctuation, divisions, and appointments require visual collation before canonical status can be claimed. Import completeness has been checked against the local PDF text, not against an independent certified printing.

Editorial method

How the witnesses will be used

Read the 16 October collation record: whole-propers word comparison, resolution of two disputed passages, five verified punctuation corrections, the Saint’s Day name/flame correction, and the remaining independent checks.

Locally preserved sources added for completion: Propers PDF, 1945 Psalms and Lessons PDF, and Calendar and tables PDF. Source hashes and import coverage are recorded in the repository source record.

Further verification is limited to checking the 1945 appointment tables cell by cell, resolving plausible outstanding wording discrepancies against the printed scan, and recording any resulting corrections. An exhaustive punctuation, typography, or whole-book independent collation is not planned. The original 1928 lesson tables remain outside this project’s scope. The reading pages will continue to state the checks actually completed. Users seeking a detailed textual examination should consult the Justus Standard Book source and the Justus 1945 lectionary PDF.
